The school is named after a tree which grows in the area. The hawthorn belongs to the rose family and grows up to about 20 ft. In the spring the tree is covered in white flowers in dense corymbs. The fruits are ovoid and crimson. This tree dates from prehistoric times when the berries were used as food. Theophrastus and Dioscorides also mentioned it in their writings. In the second half of the 19th century it began to be used in medicine as a sedative and an antispasmodic.
